Vintage'40s 291 Poker Chip Set in Box w/ Caddy & 2 Decks Bakelite Clay Plastic. Beautifully preserved poker chip set in a solid wood box with a wood caddy and 2 decks of vintage pinochle cards. No maker's mark on the box or chips, we dated this set to the 1930's or 1940's in line with the rest of the estate finds. The exterior box shows substantial wear especially at the corners, please review all the detail images.
The box interior and wood caddy are in better shape and show some scuffs and wear, typical of age and use. The chips are in fine vintage shape, there are no cracked chips.
All the chips show wear, scuffs and scratches from the many decades of gameplay. The cream chips show substantial patina, toning and discoloration, typical of age and storage method. As we place some of our items with film and television period productions (who value authentic patina, distress and age) we have left this poker set in the original, as-found condition.
The chips, box and caddy could use a thorough cleaning if they are to be used and displayed in the home. The chips seem to be plastic as they don't have the feel and weight of clay. We used a few methods to test for bakelite and could not reach a consensus. There are 149 cream chips, 71 green chips and 71 red chips for a grand total of 291 chips. The box measures 12" x 6.5" x 5 when closed, sadly the key has been lost to time.
